Travelling by Night

[Return to poems]

Leave quietly; tell not a soul.
Bring no belongings when you go.
Leave no note of explanation
among the ephemera of what was once your life.

Move quickly; travel by night.
Linger not in the light of streetlamps.
Give no story of explanation
to the vagrants and wanderers you meet.

Settle easily; find a quiet town.
Live in a cottage with a garden and a dog.
Meet a girl with glittering eyes
who wears lilies-of-the-valley in silver hair.

Live blithely; succumb not to numbness.
Postpone unpleasant realizations.
Think not of leaving quietly,
disappearing with no explanation,
moving quickly,
travelling by night.
